Divination Trio
Many people fear the almighty "Ouija Board." But what exactly is it and why are people so afraid of it? The Ouija Board got it's name from a big corporation that found a group of spiritualists using a spirit board or talking board in Ohio. They then made their own version of these spirit boards to sell to the public and made Ouija a household name.
Ouija: What is it?
A spirit board is a board (traditionally made of wood) with phrases, letters, numbers, and symbols inscribe on it used for communication with spirits. A small (movable indicator) device knowns as a planchette is used to point to corresponding portions of the board. Participants can ask the board questions and receive answers via the planchette moving to the different markings on the board by an "unseen" force (aka spirits).
Ouija History
Also know as Spirit Boards or Talking Boards, Ouija has a surprising past. When embarking on the jaunt of learning the history behind Ouija visions of ancient peoples and gypsies of old flittered through my mind.
I wholeheartedly believed these mystical pieces of wood were birthed from the psychic visions of people’s akin to Gandalf The White. Carved and created in the rolling green hills or mystical mountains of a place fill with magic and spiritual fortitude. Which still may be true, but fast forward a bit to about the late 1800’s, America.
The spiritualist movement was in full swing and the second swing of the Industrial Revolution was gearing up to giddy up. Who would have guessed one of the states’ most popular spiritual games would be born from these two historical time periods?
Ohi-Who?
Picture it. You’re a young man reading a newspaper in the year 1886 in an eastern state boarding Ohio. Your eyes come across an article talking about a group of spiritualist in the buckeye state who have concocted a device they call a “talking board” claiming it can reused to communicate with the dead.
A multitude of things cross your mind but two important thoughts collide. One, being the realization that people all across the nation are being entranced in a movement being dubbed “Spiritualism” and that this silly little board may or may not be onto something, but I am.
That something being that I could monstrously capitalize off of this un copyrighted invention and sell it to the masses who follow this so called “Spiritualist Movement”. Thus leading to the most popular selling toys in the history of early America.
This man’s name was Charles Kennard. And with the help of two other business partners and a few friends and family created the Ouija board we all know today. Now let’s get into how to use a Ouija board.
* For a more detailed history please watch our YouTube video on Ouija or listen to our podcast where I channel the souls of Mr. Kennard and his associates. *
Ouija: How to Use
There are a lot of people who fear Ouija boards. (Thanks to the movie The Exorcist *Insert eye roll here) So there are now quite a few rules and regulations when playing its game. But like with all divination tools, each practitioner have their own methods and techniques so learn as much as you can and adopt what resonates with you.
Quite a few people believe the way to yield the best results when using a Ouija board is to follow traditional séance conditions. Such as using the board in a dimly light room with little distractions. They believe this creates the perfect environment to calm their participates and put them into a trance-like state. Enabling them to create a stronger bond with the Spirit Realm. Deep breathing or meditation is also thought to aid in achieving better results.
Although you can use a spirit board alone, it is suggested to perform Ouija board séance in groups. Using a spirit board in a group may help with making the participates more comfortable as well as increasing the energy available for spirits to utilize during a reading.
But make sure all participates are comfortable. If anyone is fearful, they can cause negativity to be attracted to your séance which can in turn entice negative energy to manifest itself through the board.
Once you set... "The Mood." You will then choose a host (or ‘medium’ if you wanna be fancy) This is the person who will be asking the spirits questions. Then have all participants place two fingers on the planchette and ask your first question, "Are there any spirits here that would like to speak?" Once the planchette moves to "yes", you can continue with your next questions. However, if the answer is “no", follow the closing procedures and end the reading.
While asking your questions, the planchette should move accordingly. Spelling out words, giving dates, showing symbols, etc. But once you are done, It is very important that you close the board.
Closing Procedures
Make sure that each time you use your Ouija board that you close using the steps below. Because, using a spirit board invites spirits to manipulate our physical world (i.e. the Ouija board) to which you can theoretically open a “portal”. Just like you would make sure to close and lock a window when you are not home, you must properly close your Ouija board when not in use.
When you are finished with your reading, you will move the planchette to the "Good Bye", "Farewell," or similar word/phrase. Then move the planchette in counterclockwise circles 3 times. The counterclockwise circles are representative of closing time or time coming to an end.
It must be counterclockwise because clockwise increases time keeping the portal open. It also must be done in 3s because of The Law of 3s. Often times 3s mean divine completeness. Lastly, flip the board over and place the planchette away from the board. You don't need spirits attempting to talk to you while you sleep...
Tarot: What is it?
Have you ever had a psychic read your future by cutting a deck of cards? How accurate was it? Well if you were amazed, let's get into how it all works.
A tarot deck consists of 78 cards. This deck is split into 2 major parts. The Major arcana consisting of 22 cards that express the human experience as a story to which is used to define major events in your life. And the Minor Arcana consisting of 56 cards that more resemble a regular playing deck with cards marked from 1 to 10 with 4 court cards, the page, the knight, the queen, and the king, as well as the four suits of wands, cups, swords, pentacles.
The deck is primarily used for divination and guidance with each card representing a different meaning. The participant picks out a number of cards and the reader use these meanings to gain insight into the participant's life to explain things and give guidance.
Tarot History
Now we all know that Tarot is used as a divination tool. BUT it did not start out that way! Tarot originated in Italy as a modern-day bridge-like game called Tarocchi. Tarocchi traveled to France where it finally got its name Tarot. But still, Tarot was not used as a mystical divination tool until the late 18th century. So the Marseille Tarot deck resembles a playing deck and lacks a lot of the rich symbolism in the modern-day tarot decks.
As you can see, Tarot has drastically changed over the years and many people had added their own ideas and traditions to the cards. A man named Antoine Court de Gébelin was the author of a popular book linking the cards to ancient Egypt. We believe that he had a vision of his past life as an Egyptian man who showed him a form of tarot that was used in ancient Egypt. These cards were primarily only used by those with the highest authority. For this reason and the fact that these cards were made out of papyrus explains why no one was able to find them. However, many people discounted his theories about how tarot contained sacred knowledge and wisdom from the Egyptian god called Thoth. Who was the god of wisdom, writing, magic, and the moon. He was known as the scribe for the gods. So what do you think?
Tarot has a lot of hidden symbolism that you may or may not know about. For example, each suit represents each element. Tarot has a connection to the Hebrew alphabet, planets, elements, zodiac signs, etc. This was put into place by Eliphas Levi. He popularized the idea that tarot is connected to the tradition of kabbalah. Kabbalah is the ancient Jewish tradition of mystical interpretation of the Bible. This outlines the idea that tarot cards were a Gypsy invention. (At this time, Gypsies were believed to have originated in Egypt).
Now how did tarot finally become the divination tool we know today? Well, a man named Arthur Edward Waite partnered with Pamela Colman Smith to create the most well-known deck the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. This is the first deck that was primarily used for fortune-telling. The rich symbolism in the cards made it easier to decipher the meanings of the cards. This deck is still used today and is one of the most recommended decks for beginners due to its powerful symbolism.
Tarot: How to Use
Many people say a tarot deck needs to come to you that a deck needs to be gifted to you but that is a myth. Although the decks that find you are very powerful to you, there is no rule that you cannot buy your own first deck!
Many people suggest getting the Rider-Waite-Smith deck because the symbolism of the cards makes it easier for the reader to understand the meaning. But you want to pick a deck that speaks to you the most! One that makes you feel like you cannot leave the store without. I would suggest getting a deck where the symbolizing is the easiest for you to understand and avoid the abstract decks that may be harder to read as a beginner.
We initially thought that tarot was a tool that was manipulated but the participant's energy but that is not the case. The spirits around that person are the force that is manipulating the cards. So it does not matter who is pulling cards.
So there are many ways to go about reading tarot. There are some people that read the flyers that come out when shuffling, some who choose the cards from the top, or even some who spread them out and pick intuitively. But essentially either the reader or the participant is to shuffle and pick out a number of cards.
Next, there are a few options for how the cards are interpreted. Some readers will use spreads where they are placed in patterns and each placement answers a certain question. For example, the Celtic cross is a popular spread. While there are others who will just pull and read them organically like a story. Em reads tarot in a cast similar to the way Julie reads Ogham in one of our past Blogs. Check that out HERE.
There is no right or wrong way to read tarot cards. Even the meanings will differ slightly from reader to reader because tarot is all about how the reader interprets the information. And don't worry, spirits know this about each reader and will adapt the cards they pull to get the most accurate reading.

Pendulums: What are they?
In essence pendulums are any amount of mass secured to a point of contact in which it can swing freely. In the metaphysical community pendulums often times consist of stones, crystals, woods, or other various objects fastened to the end of a thread, rope, or chain. Just like Ouija and tarot, spiritual energy is the cause of its movement and is used to communicate with souls or spirits.
Pendulums: History
Pendulums have existed for thousands of years. Some historians speculate that these divination tools predate written language. They have been used by peoples from all walks of life. From higher spiritual advisors to everyday joes spanning from Greece, Rome, Asia, and the Americas. It has been ben documented that roman catholic priests studies and used pendulums in the 17th century.
Their uses encompass forms of divination inquiries such as love, past, present, future, location, and even holistic medical practices. To learn more about the various uses of pendulums be sure to watch our YouTube video and/or listen to our podcast!
Pendulums: How to Use
To use your pendulum hold it from the end opposite to the mass attached on its end. Holding your pendulum above your flat palm ask it to show you “Yes” and “No”. The directions; vertically, horizontally, or in a circle are respective to the “yes” and “no” you asked. You may now proceed in asking the spirits around you questions.
For more in depth or acute questions a pendulum board can be used. *For more information on pendulum boards please watch our video.*
Just like with all forms of divination tools, make sure you are comfortable using your pendulum. If you are fearful or negative, sour energy can be attracted to you and move through your pendulum.
